In the automotive world, there’s been a lot of leveling up in recent years. One particularly great example of that is the sedan versions of what used to be small hatchbacks. For the premium manufacturers, having a small sedan or a four-door coupe, meant that they can keep the face with their competitors, but also, it fills up the gaps in their model range. It all started with the gorgeous looking Mercedes-Benz CLA, continued with the Audi A3 Sedan and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. And while these vehicles may not afford much more space than their hatchback counterparts, they do provide a pretty damn good looking exterior and a rather fetching interior. Something that the targetted buyer groups love about these vehicles. Overall, they’ve proven to be a success and we’re not getting rid of them anytime soon.
On the other hand, high-performance versions of these small sedans were never the primary goal, as all three German carmakers were shy about them. Simply put, they didn’t want these small hatchbacks turned sedans, competing with their more famous brethren like the Mercedes-AMG C63, BMW M3, or the Audi S4. But, the carmakers saw the need to add a bit more power to these vehicles, and thus, especially with Audi, a hot version of their Audi A3 was released. If you want to compare it to another vehicle, the Audi S3 is best compared to the current VW Golf GTI lineup. After all, they do share a lot of their construction, technology, and design. Furthermore, the Audi S3 is powered by the same 2.0 liter TFSI engine, albeit slightly more powerful, promising similar performance to that of the Golf R. This means that the vehicle features a power output of 288 horsepower and 280 lb-ft (380Nm) of torque, coupled with an S-Tronic automatic transmission system. In turn, the Audi S3 can sprint from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in a rather quick 4.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155mph (250km/h).
